Business Ideas for a Stay at Home Mom: The options are ENDLESS these days for businesses to start from home and most are low-cost start-up options that can be started with very little experience and overhead!

I’ll never forget being at home with my brand new baby, feeling lost. Not lost because I was a new mom… but lost because I felt a sense of “now what?”.
Don’t get me wrong, a newborn baby kept me busy… but I almost felt like something was missing.
Are you feeling this too?
Being a mom is such a blessing but it’s 100% acceptable to still feel like you were put on this earth to be a momma to babies but to also feel like there’s more out there. Something of your own.
Something to feel successful about, whether your description of “success” is defined by:
- Making an income
- Completing a goal/dream you’ve had
- Just having something of your own, that’s created by YOU
If you’re unsure of what this “something” could be, I encourage you to look at what you enjoy doing. Not sure what that is?
Then I encourage you to take it a step deeper and try the following:
- Ask yourself what you enjoyed doing when you were a child?
- Ask someone close to you what they think you’re good at. Or what they’d come to you for advice on.
Sometimes we’re so close to ourselves, that it’s hard to see what we could possibly be good at. What we could possibly teach someone. What we could possibly create a business around.
Business Ideas for a Stay at Home Mom
Once you have an idea of what your business could be about, there are many different outlets or platforms that you could consider using for your business.
Here are some of my favorite business ideas for stay at home moms:
Blog
I’m kind of partial to this one. I started my lifestyle blog, Fantabulosity, from scratch, had NO idea what I was doing, and now I’m teaching others how to start and grow their blogs in to income machines.
Virtual Assistant (VA)
I LOVE this idea for a busy mom because you can be a virtual assistant in just about any area that you feel comfortable with.
What is a VA? A VA, or “virtual assistant” is someone who helps someone with tasks, typically online. These tasks could look like writing email newsletters for other businesses, bloggers, and/or influencers. Or, maybe it’s a bookkeeper. Love finances? You can help a business keep its finances in order by being a bookkeeping virtual assistant.
Love graphic design? No need to have a degree to be a virtual assistant! Advertise your services to businesses, saying you can create graphics for their websites, social media, and/or Pinterest! Use online software like PicMonkey or Canva if you’re newer to the graphics world, before taking the leap with a more complex software.
Food/Content Photographer
Did you know that some bloggers love to purchase food and recipe photos from others to put on their blogs and websites? YES! It’s a thing! There’s even a food photography course called “Pretty Focused” that I recommend for those who are thinking of doing this but want help with learning how to shoot food photography. The results that I’ve seen from students who have taken this course, are SHOW-STOPPING. I’ve even purchased content from previous students and I’m blown away at how beautiful the images are!
Etsy Shop
I LOVE the Etsy platform for a stay at home mom. This could be used for those who are crafty, know how to create digital products/files, and so much more. Need ideas? Browse Etsy to see what kind of products others are selling to see if you see something that you may be interested in creating and selling too!
eBay
Love shopping? Then you may LOVE shopping around at Yard Sales, Auctions, Flea Markets or even department stores to see if they have a big sale going on. Stock up on products and re-sell them on eBay!
Amazon
My mind was BLOWN when I found out you could sell items on Amazon without even touching the product. Direct shipping from the manufacturer, to Amazon (or to the consumer), is a REAL thing and I love that the products don’t take up space in your home and you don’t even have to go to the post office to mail anything!
I’ve chatted with Jessica from The Selling Family over on Fantabulosity and I’m amazed at how much they know (and teach) about selling on Amazon. If this is something that intrigues you, then definitely check out their Amazon Bootcamp course!
Coach/Consultant
Did you work somewhere before becoming a stay at home mom? Were you born with a special skill/talent? Don’t hold back from helping someone else who would PAY to learn from you. Being a coach/consultant is a business idea that can give you flexibility, and can allow you to talk about something you’re already familiar with!
MLM
Short for “multi-level marketing”, there are quite a few options out there these days and I know a lot of gals who have made a nice living through joining an MLM.
What are the most successful small businesses?
No matter what kind of business you start, it can be successful. So to say that only certain businesses will be successful isn’t really fair because all businesses can fail too. However, after being an entrepreneur for over 15 years, I can tell you that one of the most important factors of a successful business is to be passionate about what you do, so your passion/excitement can help you push through the difficult times.
Of course there are other factors that can play in to a successful business like, low-overhead costs, working smart, doing research on current trends, etc. but I’ll save that post for another day.
Just know that no matter which business you choose, it can be successful and this day in age, it’s easier than ever to start a business as a stay at home mom because of the internet and the trend of so many working from home.
Now, are those ideas the ONLY business ideas for stay at home moms? Not at all. They’re just the most common and the ways that I’m more familiar with and have seen MAJOR success with, whether that’s from my own business experience or close friends who have had success!
Not Sure Where to Start?
